ABOUT ME
Hi there! I am David, an enthusiastic and fully-qualified English Teacher with QTS and a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). I have worked in mainstream schools and have spent almost nine years in alternative provision, teaching and tutoring young people who have found it hard to access mainstream education, helping them overcome their obstacles and manage their needs. As such, I have extensive experience in working with young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs as well as Special Educational Needs (SEN), including autism, anxiety, depression, as well as other behavioural and language needs. I have helped students achieve top grades at whichever level they are studying, be it GCSE or A-Level.
I have taught across the Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 (GCSE) and Key Stage 5 (A-Level) curriculum in English Language and English Literature, as well as teaching Maths (KS3-4), Science (KS3-4), Sociology (KS4-5), History (KS3-5) and Philosophy (KS5).
I have worked with pupils considering their next steps both at 16 and 18, and have experience writing and supporting applications for next steps, be they for college, vocational courses, or university.
I also have experience working with adult learners and can offer support with honing essays and other writing for university students and beyond.
Whether you need help re-engaging with learning, tailored support to help boost grades, or just cramming for exam preparation, I can help!

TESTIMONIALS
"I worked with David on my GCSEs, who supported me across a range of subjects, including History, Religious Studies, English Literature and English Language. I remember being particularly impressed by David’s genuine interest in English, and how he read around the subject above and beyond what you would expect. This demonstrated the diligence and care that characterises his approach to teaching but also someone who enjoys learning himself. Having an engaged tutor like this meant that I was able to engage more deeply with the texts and enjoy discussions of their meaning, which took me to a higher level. I was happy to achieve two 9s in English.
I had such a good experience with David as a tutor that we sought out his help again for A-Levels. He tutored me as my sole educator in A-level Government and Politics and History. I received A grades in both. David took the time to read widely around the syllabus and taught at a level which exceeded what you would expect at sixth form. This involved interesting discussions and additional readings, which encouraged me to reach a higher level in these subjects. David also offered detailed essay feedback and helped me better structure them, as well as improving my critical thinking and analysis skills.
David clearly cares about his students and is sensitive to students with particular needs or challenges. He will work with you to find the way of learning that works best for you and to reach your goals."

‘David tutored my son for both GCSE and A level and he did a fantastic job. He is a very skilled and effective teacher who goes the extra mile to make sure he is on top of the subjects, including the expectations of the examiners. He is also great at building a rapport with his students. He clearly sees tutoring as a vocation, not just a job. I cannot recommend him highly enough.’

David is an amazing tutor. During the time I spent working with him to improve my English Literature and English Language abilities, my grades improved from a seven and a six in my mock exams to an eight and a nine respectively in my final GCSE’s. The primary reason I found being tutored by David so helpful was that his sessions were consistently engaging and enjoyable, resulting in me having a much deeper enjoyment, as well as understanding, of the content I was studying. Through striking an effective balance between fun discussions surrounding the ideas in the texts and using pragmatic structures to ensure the appropriate exam technique, David helped me immensely to increase my confidence, interest and overall ability.

As a father, I could not have been more delighted by the support that David provided my son with English. David also kept in touch with me to ensure I was happy with how my son was progressing. I could not recommend a better English Language and English Literature tutor.

David was my one to one tutor when I was 15, when I was going though a time of much emotional distress. I had left mainstream education and I was transitioning into attending a tuition service. David adapted to spontaneous questions and political debates. He would seamlessly bring the conversation back to learning, it never felt like I was being taught at, I was learning with someone. Later, when I was in year 12, I was set to do my mathematics GCSE as I hadn’t done it yet. It always feels a little strange when you are behind your peers but I wasn’t able to attend the classes at sixth form in mainstream to catch up.
When I discovered that I could reach out to David to tutor me through my mathematics revision, I was genuinely relieved. It was just us going at a personalised pace that would enable me. As a person on the autistic spectrum, I often haven’t been enabled, but David did that. He dealt with my needs in an intelligent and sensitive way.
David also tutored me in year 13 with essay writing for my politics A-level. I was struggling with the essay structure that was required to coherently relay the points I wanted to make. It was just before covid hit that I had cracked it with David and I was getting As from my politics teacher at sixth form.
Not only did I get all of the A-levels I needed for me attend SOAS, but my love for learning was reignited. I put it down to Dave stepping into my learning life as a strong building block for where I am now - 4th year at SOAS, studying Politics and Swahili. David is someone I can very confident endorse to continue his brilliant work with tutoring, he is exactly who a young person needs to pick them up when learning environments try to fit a rectangle into a square box.
